O Arquivo Geral da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro foi inicialmente concebido em 1567, na época da fundação da cidade, o que o torna uma das instituições arquivísticas mais antigas do Brasil. Atualmente, é vinculado à Secretaria Municipal de Governo e Integridade Pública (SEGOV), sendo o órgão responsável pela gestão, preservação e difusão do patrimônio documental produzido e recebido pela administração pública municipal. Sua missão é garantir que a memória administrativa, histórica e cultural da cidade do Rio de Janeiro seja devidamente organizada, conservada e disponibilizada ao cidadão.
Ao longo de sua trajetória, o Arquivo acumulou um acervo de valor inestimável, composto por documentos que abrangem desde o período colonial até os dias atuais, incluindo registros de leis, decretos, processos administrativos, plantas urbanísticas e outros materiais que contam a evolução da cidade. Esse conjunto documental é essencial não apenas para a pesquisa histórica e acadêmica, mas também para a garantia de direitos dos cidadãos, a transparência dos atos públicos e o planejamento urbano. A instituição atua como guardiã da memória carioca, permitindo que moradores e pesquisadores compreendam as transformações políticas, sociais e urbanas do município ao longo de mais de quatro séculos.

The General Archive of the City of Rio de Janeiro was initially conceived in 1567, at the time of the city's founding, making it one of the oldest archival institutions in Brazil. Currently, it is linked to the Municipal Secretariat of Government and Public Integrity (SEGOV), being the body responsible for the management, preservation, and dissemination of the documentary heritage produced and received by the municipal public administration. Its mission is to ensure that the administrative, historical, and cultural memory of the city of Rio de Janeiro is properly organized, preserved, and made available to the citizen.
