In celebration of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, the Museum of Tomorrow held, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the event “Pathways for Sustainable Societies: Paulo Vieira and Célia Xakriabá chat about indigenous peoples”. The meeting brought together comedian and presenter Paulo Vieira and indigenous leader, educator and activist Célia Xakriabá (Xakriabá people, Minas Gerais). The conversation addressed questions such as: what makes an indigenous person indigenous, how to keep ancestral cultures alive in a globalized world, what knowledge is at risk of being lost with Westernization, and how to deconstruct mistaken perceptions of society – showing that “the indigenous person’s place can be anywhere”. The event reflected on resistance, memory, territoriality and indigenous knowledge as paths to more sustainable societies.
