The Ministry of Defense of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was the body responsible for the administration and command of the Soviet Armed Forces between 1953 and 1991.
Subordinate to the Council of Ministers, its main functions were the defense of the national territory, military strategic planning, and the coordination of state security and armament policies. Its headquarters were in Moscow, and its role was central to defense policy and geopolitical relations during the Cold War.
