In 2019, the Museum of Tomorrow had the privilege of being one of the venues for Colaboramerica, an emblematic event that brought together prominent figures from diverse fields to discuss collaboration, innovation, and sustainability. Among these figures was Antônio Bispo dos Santos, known as Nêgo Bispo, a remarkable quilombola (member of a community descended from escaped slaves), philosopher, poet, writer, professor, and political activist whose presence profoundly enriched the discussions.
Nêgo Bispo was a driving force in the fight for quilombola rights, a fervent defender of ancestral knowledge, and a staunch critic of colonialism, which he saw as the origin of many global injustices. His works and speeches are a testament to his profound vision and commitment to social justice. Among his most significant literary contributions are "Quilombos, Modes and Meanings" and "Colonization, Quilombos: Modes and Meanings." These works not only explore the resistance and history of Black people but also propose new ways of understanding and interacting with the world.
Nêgo Bispo was honored with numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career for his tireless work in quilombola social movements and for defending the land. His voice was a constant presence at conferences and panels on human and environmental rights, both in Brazil and internationally.
In Nêgo Bispo's words, "It is not enough to just resist; it is also necessary to build new paths that honor our history and our land." This phrase captures the essence of his message: a combination of resistance and the active construction of a more just and equitable future.
At Colaboramerica, Nêgo Bispo shared these insights, offering a new perspective on the complex interrelationships between human beings, nature, and society. He challenged participants to rethink existing models and to value the wisdom and ways of life of quilombola peoples.
His death in 2023 left a huge void, but his legacy persists, encouraging us all to continue the fight for a more just world. Nêgo Bispo taught us that true change begins with respect for and celebration of diverse cultures and wisdom.
Hail Nêgo Bispo. Hail the Brazilian quilombola population. May the words and actions of Nêgo Bispo continue to resonate and inspire new generations in the pursuit of a more just and sustainable tomorrow.
